Episode #7 - Adam and Tony explore the easiest and hardest historical topics to grasp for 1750-1900.  They explore Crane Brinton’s anatomy of a revolution, details of the Haitian Revolution and Voodoo, the Urban Game, The Scramble for Africa game,  and the Tanzimat vs. Meiji Reforms via a debate analyzing changes in the Ottoman and Japanese Empires.  Other points of discussion also include: All Star DBQs, SAQs, LEQs that “punch above their weight” for the timeframe, Freshmen class activities, favorite historical trips for the timeframe, teacher tips, and recommended resources.

  • The Urban Game
    • There are many free versions available online.  Do a google search, and you should be able to find a number of versions with instructions.
  • 11:54 The Scramble for Africa and finding a version that uses 1885 based natural resources is the key element.  We do not like a simulator that does not have coal, iron, palm oil, or ivory.  A few different versions can be found online or potentially in the APWH Group via a simple search.

  • Tanzimat Reforms vs. Meiji Restoration Debate: Which had more potential? Ottoman Empire and Japan   
    • LEQ based upon this - The steam engine was the focal point of industrialization from it’s beginnings in England circa 1750 CE.  However, after about 1830 CE, industrialism began to further advance, as the speed and efficiency of communication was greatly enhanced due to more industrial inventions.  This eventually sparked the second Industrial Revolution (more based upon electricity) after 1870 CE. 
      • Develop an argument that evaluates the political and/or economic effects of   industrialism in different parts of the world (outside of Europe) from 1830-1900.
